What is DBT?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a popular and effective therapy model and set of personal growth tools. DBT skills in the areas of mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness support people in replacing maladaptive behaviors with skillful behaviors, in responding to life rather than reacting, and can enhance the lives of all.   Created by Dr. Marsha Linehan, DBT is an evidence based model using skills training to “change behavioral, emotional, thinking, and interpersonal patterns associated with problems in living” (Linehan 2015)

Why Music?

Music is engaging, fun, & helps us remember things. Reinforcing skills for mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness through music can support people who are involved in a DBT program as well as those who are not.

What if I have no musical talent or know how?

No problem. Our ready made resources are easy for you to use if you are musical or not. Also, our DBT informed Board Certified Music Therapists are available to you.

Here’s how music can help you with DBT.

Clinicians

As a DBT clinician,  we understand that you sometimes have challenges with clients who don’t pay attention or are bored in groups, and those who just can’t seem to remember the skills.

If you ever seek creative ideas for reaching these clients and for livening up your skills training but don’t have time or don’t feel creative yourself, don’t worry!  We’ve designed a ready-made resource library of activities (even for the non-musician) to help you:

  • Make your DBT groups more engaging!
  • Make virtual groups more interactive!
  • Reach participants with different learning styles!
  • Enhance client ability to understand and apply DBT skills!
  • Provide a variation on skills groups for participants who are on a 2nd or 3rd cycle!

Research fact: In a recent study completed at Kalamazoo Psychiatric Hospital, a music therapist and a psychologist compared traditional DBT skills groups with skills training that included music therapy.  The results on client outcomes were favorable for music.  The results were released in the Journal of Music Therapy in June of 2022.
